Eligibility Requirements
To join the American Legion, you must have served at least one day of active military duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and have been honorably discharged or are still serving honorably. You must also meet at least one of the following service periods:
- April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918 (World War I)
- December 7, 1941 – Present (World War II and beyond, to include conflicts such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and ongoing service post-9/11).
These eligibility dates are set by Congress and ensure that the American Legion represents all wartime veterans, across generations.
